This painting is from my Human Portrait painting class. The assignment was paint four portraits of ourselve with a dialouge between all 4. My dialouge turned into more of a theme, and I went with the 4 notable elements (earth, air, fire, water). Originally, I was going to have one face being punched and the others reacting. I wish I had done that now, but I still like this theme.
This is my Water portrait. I wanted the face to be overwhelming blue, like radiant but still have hints of flesh tints. So, I changed alot of the values in photoshop to get an understanding of how I should paint it. At first, when I started painting, I did a black and white underpainting and then I glazed over that to get the colors I wanted (since there is so much blue and most blues are translucent which are better suited for glazing). But, when I started, my professor seemed to disapprove of this method (and I know it is a PROVEN method). It really sadden me that he did not trust my technique.
The whole time I was painting, I kept telling myself, "I'll prove him wrong, just wait and see what I can do!" I talked to him about a week after I finished this one, and he told me that with my painting and the process of the painting becomes the dialouge besides the theme I chose.
My family said this was one of my best works they ever seen from me so I'm very happy right now Other Portraits:
